Mimosa- the touch me not plant

Mimosa is a genus of about 400 species of herbs and shrubs in the subfamily called Mimosoideae of the legume family Fabaceae. There are two species of the mimosa called mimosa pudica and mimosa tenuiflora.

The members of this genus are among the few plants that are capable of rapid movement. The leaves of the Mimosa pudica close quickly when they are touched lightly.They open up in the daytime and close at night time. Mimosa Pudica are also known “as touch me” not in the colloquial term.These plants frow 1 feet to three feet tall in the wild and sometimes disturb plantations.

There are about 400 species of this plant. Mimosa can be distinguished from a large related genera Acacia and Albiziasince its flowers have 10 stamens. The Mimosa that is actually a globular flower is actually a cluster of many individual flowers. The name “Mimosa” is also been applied to other related species with similar pinnate or bipinnate leaves,


The Mimosa pudica is a creeping perennial herb of the pea family.They grow all over the world in warm and humid climate. They are found in South East Asia, South America, Tanzania, Africa and other various Pacific islands.
